Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

During our English lessons the first half of the Spring term we will be using the book 'Great Women Who Changed the World'. In the first few weeks, the class will be focusing on the key skills which are needed to write a successful biography and looking at different texts.

We will be covering a wide range of topics in Maths including adding and subtracting fractions.

Our main focus for our curriculum time is Vikings and Anglo Saxons. We are going to look at the invasions which took place and a significant individual, Erik the Red. Linking with Design and Technology, we will be making our own Viking Long Boat. We will need lots of scrap cardboard, so if you are able to provide some, we would be very grateful! As well as History, we are going to be learning French. We will be focusing primarily on writing full sentences and practising spoken language.

Our PE lessons this term will focus on Athletics and Tennis. Please ensure that all children bring full PE kits to school every Monday. This should consist of a white t shirt with logo, black shorts or jogging bottoms and trainers. If it is cold outside the children will wear their green school jumper.

In Science we are covering the Properties and Changes of Matter. For the first few lessons, we will focus on the different states of matter, such as solids, liquids and gases. We will be conducting a large number experiments to see what materials will experience an irreversible change.

This term, our JTAs have been working alongside the Hertfordshire Council to make an action plan for the school. There will be a short survey for parents to fill out in the Spring Term regarding the form of transport which is used most often.
