Welcome to Year 1
We have spent the first half term settling into Year 1 really well. We have had lots of exciting new learning opportunities and have faced them all with positive attitudes.
In English we have been learning how to write labels, lists and captions. We have written our own labels to label our body parts and written lists about what The Very Hungry Caterpillar ate in the story. We have also been working hard writing our own captions for the story ‘Plenty of Love to Go Round’.
In maths we have been learning about positioning and ordinal numbers. We have also explored how the same amount can be represented in many ways using objects and marks. We then looked at more than, less than and ordering different values. Although the learning has been different to EYFS, we are still following a hands-on approach in maths. We are following the steps of ‘make it, draw it, write it’ to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts we’ve been learning about.
In our curriculum lessons we have been exploring ‘Toys From the Past’. We have been learning through history, science, design and technology and English. We discovered that toys haven’t always been made using the same materials and even had a go at creating our own peg dolls as well as cup and ball games after the design process.
In Year 1 we had the opportunity to take part in the Harvest Festival, performing the Harvest Samba for parents and carers. We have had a lot of fun this first half term and we are very proud of our learning so far.
We’re looking forward to more hard work and fun together during Autumn 2. Our topic will be ‘Festivals’ and we will also be working towards our Christmas performance of ‘Christmas with the Aliens’.
